Donna, you will find that Joao/Joam, Sao/Sam (for Sam Jorge) and just about any name ending in "O" can be written with an "M" in the earlier time periods. The Priests also had a bad habit, in myh opinion, of writing Jorge and Jose in English--George & Jozeph/Joseph. Who knows why!
