I was able to get a death certificate for my great-grandfather who came to California but went back to Faial, his island of birth sometime in the 1930s. In the translation of the record, I discovered he died in a place called "Poor's Asylum" in 1948, which was located in Matriz, Faial. I cannot find anything online about this place. I'd like to know it's history and see what it looked like. I'm wondering if it was part of a church? Thanks in advance to anyone who can shed some light on this place!
