Don M,

Here's how to get started researching:
http://www.worldgenweb.org/azrwgw/research-aids-a---l/finding-your-portuguese/

Because Hawaii was a U.S. Territory for awhile, there are other sources
(they have an 1890 Kingdom of Hawaii census - order from your local Family
History Center. Ancestry didn't scan everything). Also you may want to try
this Portuguese Hawaiian web site: www.yourislandroutes.com

Good luck,

Ribeira das Tainhas, Achada
