Hi Brian M, You are talking about what us genealogists call genealogy software. You will never get a consensus on the "strongest" no matter where you are searching. It's like trying to poll people for the "best" car. We pick whatever car suits us and our budgets best. So it is with genealogy software.
Currently, there are 2 groups of genealogy software out there. One is the fully-featured genealogy software programs. This is a computer program that lives on your computer. The most popular ones on the market today are Family Tree Maker (https://www.mackiev.com/ftm/), Legacy Family Tree ( www.legacyfamilytree.com), and RootsMagic (www.rootsmagic.com). Legacy's "Standard Edition" is free. Download it and give it a try. RootsMagic's Essentials is also free. Download that and give it a try. Family Tree Maker doesn't have a free trial version. The other group of genealogy software (if you want to call it that) is the cloud based systems. They definitely aren't fully featured like the ones I listed above. They are more of a display of your genealogy work. I believe you need a monthly subscription if you are going to be working on your tree for most of them. The most popular ones out there are Ancestry.com, MyHeritage, and Geni.com. These online versions definitely have limitations. Some of the fully-featured genealogy software programs sync with My Heritage. I don't know which one(s). You can always create a Gedcom on any genealogy software and override your tree on My Heritage. My suggestion to you would be to download Legacy and RootsMagic and play around with them. Enter yourself, parents, and grandparents. Make a "mistake" and enter a death date BEFORE the birth date to see how it handles it. Try thinking of other "mistakes" that you typically make and see how the software handles it. Then go with the software that grabs you. That's the software that is for you. All have Gedcom format, so your work can be shared with others. Right now, I believe Legacy and RootsMagic may be having a sale for the holidays. If you want to know, my criteria for a genealogy program was if it accepted diacritics (accented letters) and could take a place field that was 19 or 20 characters long. This was in the mid-90s, when things were more limited. Both are a non-issue now. My current criteria would be able to search for the correct Maria de Jesus or Manuel Silva and to be able to filter the program for groups of people. So I'd need an index that I could customize so I could see all my Maria de Jesuses with various details (birth and death dates, parents, and spouse are my favorite). And a customizable filter. And UTF-8, which my old program didn't have. Your criteria may be different.
