hi, barzel is attested in biblical aramaic as parzel. pirzul in hebrew means iron hoofing, a blacksmith job. i reckon that this, plus plowing, were the first uses of iron. my etymology for iron is therefore:
parsa (hoof) --> parzel --> barzel and dont ask me where the final l came from, i just dont know. clearly it is not the other way, namely, parzel --> parsa, since parsa is very well explained by "spread". now the question remains, what is the exact relation between parsa (hoof) and parash/paras (horse). nir On Wed, 09 Mar 2011 02:39:06 -0500, b-hebrew-request wrote > Send b-hebrew mailing list submissions to > [email protected] > > To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit > http://lists.ibiblio.org/mailman/listinfo/b-hebrew > or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to > [email protected] > > You can reach the person managing the list at > [email protected] > > When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific > than "Re: Contents of b-hebrew digest..." -- Open WebMail Project (http://openwebmail.org) _______________________________________________ b-hebrew mailing list [email protected] http://lists.ibiblio.org/mailman/listinfo/b-hebrew
