>Dear Randall, in a post sent to the list last 13th April you said that verbs DIBER, speak, KIPER, aton, and KIBES, wash, are used in the Tanakh only with segol -and not tsere- in the second consonant.
I remark that DIBER and KIBES have tsere as well. Look at Js 14:10 and at Gn 49:11 respectively. Friendly, Pere Porta> Pere, look again at the tana"k and at what I said. RB: "Today, everything is 'regularized' into a pi``el pattern like shillem 'paid',while in antiquity the form was shillam 'paid'. We also have three 'segol' pie``el in dibber 'spoke', kipper 'atoned', and kibbes 'washed'." Still looks good to me. Modern Hebrew shillem was Biblical shillam. Of course, those biblical pi``al forms become pi``el in 'pause' (major accent pause). With the three words dibber, kibbex and kipper: The 'contextual' form of dibber and kibbes is with segol. We have 236 dibber forms with segol. In addition, there are 28 occurrences of 'pausal' dibber with tsere. We kibbes we have 12 with segol and 2 'pausal' with tsere. The form at Gn 49.11, though, is anomolous, because a pausal form would not have been expected. We have no 'pausal' kipper forms. Adiaphora like the above are only useful to Hebrew teachers and only if they don't mention them in class! That and 10 shekels will get you a cup of coffee in Jerusalem. braxot Randall Buth -- Randall Buth, PhD www.biblicallanguagecenter.com Biblical Language Center Learn Easily - Progress Further - Remember for Life _______________________________________________ b-hebrew mailing list [email protected] http://lists.ibiblio.org/mailman/listinfo/b-hebrew
