I notice that XERPAH חֶרְפָּה is with a dagesh in the P,
and that XEMDAH חֶמְדָּה is with a dagesh in the D,
implying a possibly original xiriq under the X.
I fancy that the segol = .. +. is a notational compromise between a  
tsere and a xiriq.
