I can glean bits and > pieces but am not sure of what the overall discussion is about. ok - the overall goal is a decentralised self-configuring internet: everything works, but there's not one single-point-of-failure... but it all "looks like" it does at the moment - you still get DNS (but it's p2p), you still get an internet connection (but you don't really know and don't really care where from, and it happens right this second to be a wireless mesh which drops you in some nebulous adhoc way onto several borrowed and shared wireless access points). key to the success of this goal is that there has to be a number of basic infrastructure components working and in place: one of them is provided by babel, the other is a p2p naming service which can do both unique _and_ group registrations. so, most of the discussion with juliusz was regarding the features that babel presently provides; me finding out its capabilities and whether it can be used to bridge many different wireless and wired local networks (it can) to form a cohesive virtual WAN (it can); and if babel can do e.g. QoS on top of that, due to e.g. severe bandwidth limitations such as 4800 baud 20-mile-range packet radio (it can't right now but can easily be adapted). the extistence of p2p dns, and the p2p-NS idea (with unique and group registrations a la RFC 1001/1002 - see rfc1001 sections 5.2, 15.1.1 and many others) was mentioned for completeness, in the discussions with juliusz, to give _him_ some context :) hope this helps - and i'd be delighted to help spec out something like a p2p-NS if you have the inclination / resources to implement it, of course, not taking up babel-users' time with it :) l. _______________________________________________ Babel-users mailing list [email protected] http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/babel-users
