Personally I connected via telnet to the babel front-end/debug port. babeld will send you basic information about the shared routes and about its neighbours. This helped me a lot while debugging my network. In OpenWRT this is the 'local_port' configuration option. Using plain babeld I think it is the '-g' option. Hope this helps.
