Here is a follow-up of the previous announcement, with more details:

Bay Area Biosystematists Meeting
Tuesday evening, April 12th, 2011

at San Jose State University, One Washington Square, Duncan Hall
'Spring Special'
"Monitoring Biosphere 1:
novel sampling strategies resolving effects
of environmental change"

Featuring a Diverse and Distinguished Panel of Discussants
Followed by vigorous audience discussion

Panel members representing different approaches will give short informal presentations (10 minutes each), to be followed by active audience participation
(this following the traditional dinner and beer, of course!)

Confirmed Panel Members:
Josh Mackie (SJSU, moderator)
Scott Shaffer (SJSU) will be presenting a synthesis of widely collaborative work in a talk titled 'Tracking Apex Marine Predator Movements in a Dynamic Ocean'

Kristen Kusic Heady (UCSC): 'Biogeographic patterns of the rocky intertidal along the temperate Pacific Coast of North America'. Kristen’s work demonstrates an increased precision in resolving community structure dynamics. This precision in part stems from the project’s broad origins, as survey work commenced in the Partnership for the Interdisciplinary Study of Coastal Oceans (PISCO) and the Multi-Agency Rocky Intertidal Monitoring Network (MARINe) monitoring programs.

Rebecca Terry (UCSC) will be discussing some broadly applicable methods: incorporating fossils into ecological analyses to determine pre-impact baseline data.

Gretchen LeBuhn (SFSU) will conclude the presentations with a talk titled ‘The art of running a crowd-sourced science project’, describing the Great Sunflower Project, an initiative that generates data on flowering timing and pollinator populations, through a great deal of involvement by the general public community.

The venerable Biosystematists group (http://www.biosystematists.org/), operating since 1936 (see the history on the website), is the primary inter-institutional seminar/discussion group on evolution for the Bay Area, so we encourage everyone to join in.
