Dear all,
The first session of this series will be a week from today, April
12th, from 5:00 - 8:00, up at Boalt School of Law. To maintain
continuity, we want people to sign up for the whole series at this
point. We realize people might have to miss a few due to travel,
etc., but it will be a much better experience if we have one group
throughout. Participants are welcome from all career levels from
undergraduates to emeriti, and all campuses (although meetings will be
on the Berkeley campus).
If you are interested, please contact Brian as described below and
we'll put you on the list and send you more details.
Best,
Brent
Yearlong Sawyer Seminar on Speciesism -- register now
From April 2012–May 2013, faculty at Berkeley and Stanford are
organizing an academic seminar series (associated with public outreach
events) to discuss Speciesism and the Future of Humanity: Biology,
Culture, and Sociopolitics. The series is supported by the Andrew W.
Mellon Foundation under their Sawyer Seminar Program and will aim to
inspire a global dialogue on the relationships of humans to the rest
of the natural world, highlighting the present and future states of
biodiversity conservation and sustainability, including public policy
measures. We will begin with a biological emphasis, and highlight how
scientific and evolutionary worldviews prime self-perceptions,
behavior, and sociopolitical worldviews. We will then draw upon data
from the social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences to outline
prospects for long-term global sustainability by examining public
policy solutions to unsustainable practices.
Each academic session will involve two presenters, a panel of formal
discussants, and an academic audience that will participate in active
discussion. The first session will be early evening Thursday April
12th (dinner will be provided) and the subsequent eight sessions will
continue approximately monthly during the academic year through Spring
2013.
If you are interested in participating in the seminar, please contact
Brian Swartz ([email protected]) and provide him with
information on: (1) your academic or professional background and
special interests relative to these topics; and (2) an idea of how
many sessions you should be able to attend. Ideally, to maintain
continuity across the sessions, we would appreciate regular attendance
of participants. For further details, please see our website at: http://ucjeps.berkeley.edu/bryolab/Mellon-Sawyer/
