Plan to attend the kick-off BABS meeting for this academic year!
Bay Area Biosystematists Meeting
Tuesday evening, September 11th, 2012
at UC Berkeley, 1002 Valley Life Sciences Bldg.
"The Micro- and Macroevolutionary Divide: moving towards a resolution"
Featuring two or three presenters who will give short talks
followed by vigorous audience discussion
(all this following traditional pizza and beer, of course!)
Can all macroevolutionary processes be reduced to population
genetics? Alternatively, are most population genetic processes mere
noise when it comes to the big picture of macroevolutionary
processes? These and other extreme statements are often heard -- can
we arrive at a resolution to enable an integrated, cross-disciplinary
future of evolutionary biology? The panel (details to come in a later
email) being assembled by the organizer, Brian Swartz, will ponder
these and related contentious issues with the help of the audience.
The venerable Biosystematists group (http://www.biosystematists.org/
), operating since 1936 (see the history on the website), is an
important inter-institutional seminar/discussion group on evolution
for the Bay Area, so we encourage everyone to join in.
Schedule and venue:
5:30 pm - social gathering with beverages (beer and soft drinks)
and informal pizza dinner: cost $10, to be collected at the door,
1002 Valley Life Sciences Bldg., UC Berkeley campus. This is the new
Herbaria Seminar Room: enter through the north central doors of VLSB
on the first floor and it is immediately on your left just inside a
short side hallway.
7:00 pm - talks followed by discussion, in same room.
Reservations required for beverages and dinner (but not if you are
coming for the talks alone). Please email reservations to your host,
Brent Mishler, at [email protected] by Friday, Sept. 7th
