Dear all,

As is now traditional, we will have a special "outreach" Bay Area Biosystematists meeting for Darwin Day. This is a general talk that would be useful for students as well as faculty. You are welcome to bring your classes. Be sure to RSVP to [email protected] if you are coming for dinner.

This will be coordinated with other events in VLSB that day celebrating Darwin's birthday (organized by the Entomology Students Organization and the Essig Museum of Entomology), including behind-the- scenes museums tours, birthday cake and a toast to Darwin in 1001 VLSB (front room of the Herbaria) at 5:15, and a photo context in 1101 VLSB (the UCMP Fishbowl) starting at 5:30. Details will be forthcoming; this is all the more reason to bring your grad students and classes over to Berkeley for the afternoon/evening.

Special Darwin's Day
Bay Area Biosystematists Meeting

Tuesday evening, February 12th, 2013

at UC Berkeley, Valley Life Sciences Bldg.

"How to vindicate Charles Darwin in 366 days"

Matthew J. James
Chair and Professor
Department of Geology
Sonoma State University

The title refers to the 366 days that the 1905-06 Galapagos expedition from the California Academy of Sciences spent doing field work during the overall 17-month expedition. For background reading, see these two papers by Dr. James:

The venerable Biosystematists group (http://www.biosystematists.org/ ), operating since 1936 (see the history on the website), is an important inter-institutional seminar/discussion group on evolution for the Bay Area, so we encourage everyone to join in on a regular basis.

Schedule and venue:

6:00 pm - Social gathering with beverages (beer and soft drinks) and informal pizza dinner: cost $10, to be collected at the door, 1002 Valley Life Sciences Bldg., UC Berkeley campus. This is the new Herbaria Seminar Room: enter through the north central doors of VLSB on the first floor and it is immediately on your left just inside a short side hallway.

7:30 pm - Talk in 2040 Valley Life Sciences Bldg. This is up one flight of stairs, then over to the east hallway

Reservations required for beverages and dinner (but not if you are coming for the talk alone). Please email reservations to your host, Meghan Culpepper, at [email protected] by Friday, Feb. 9th.
