AFAICS, your variant removes _everything_ in the parent. IOW, instead
of
rm -rf $ROOT/$RELATIVE_PATH
you do
test -n $ROOT && rm -rf $ROOT/*
rm $ROOT/$RELATIVE_PATH
which is not the same thing...
