Surely using the HTTP/MIME method doesn't force one version onto the user, assuming that they can configure their user agent to prioritise which version they prefer first, which they want second, etc. So I might ask for an Ogg as my first choice and if that isn't available I'll have an MP3. If that isn't available either I'll go for a .au file and finally try a WMA file. Someone else might ask for WMA first or then MP3.

This is the mechanism that HTTP has used for ages - seems sensible to me to keep using what works rather than inventing a new wheel.
