It is possible to browse bbc.co.uk via a cable set top box, however it's not exactly a nice experience (I've tried!) So, I *think* the main reason for cable being there is due to the way that digital text and interactive TV services on NTL and Telewest are delivered. Both NTL and Telewest use Liberate as their middleware, and the version in the UK is based upon HTML 3.2, with various extensions. There are various ways you can get the HTML into the set top box, which I could bore you to death with if you really like, but one method is via a web server - in the BBC's case, the same web servers that run bbc.co.uk also serve up BBCi (the BBC's red button service). - Sent via the backstage.bbc.co.uk discussion group.
