well the condensed version is that a very high proportion of the population cannot read and write. and for a significant proportion of these symbol support can prove successful. there are a number of commercial products out there, this is the open source version...

from the senit list recently:

"Absolutely! The largest single group of pupils with additional support needs in Scotland are those with moderate/severe learning difficulties (25%), who
are likely to benefit from symbol support...."
