Sorry guys - my point was misinterpreted!
->Big Ben is (c) ITN, Auntie only uses its sound on R4 at 6pm and 10pm
I wasn't suggesting anywhere the use of a Big Ben image for the site or
talking about chimes heard on radio...
My point was that the famous clock tower (commonly known as Big Ben even
though that's a bell!) would still look lovely in the London skyline even if
the time were not accurate, but people would question the worth of a big,
public clock showing the wrong time!
The BBC clock image may be a well-known branding icon but that's not the
primary function of any clock and I say if you have it on the front page it
ought to be showing the correct time - sent out by the BBC - not just
whatever your PC thinks it is.
If you put it on the new front page as is, I can guarantee some who don't
know how to sync their pc to internet time will consider that to be a guide
to the "right time". I just thought it sensible to mention at this stage in
case others hadn't noticed that it isn't the case!
We'd think it daft if teletext used the television's own idea of time so it
just seems gimmicky and misleading this way. Furthermore if the BBC visual
clock was removed from terrestrial TV channels because it would be "out" on
digital services, why then introduce a lookalike on the site which doesn't
even try to tell you the correct time?
The functionality should be as well implemented as the look!
