Fearghas has pointed out a valid issue and before I wrote my comments, I knew the Mobile factor would come into the equation.

The Mobile platform after careful research and with comments emerging from W3C is to conclude that the Mobile environment is a completely different standard and services need to be developed, solely dedicated for Mobile user audience.

The factors steam from not only delivery using and authoring in wml as opposed to Xhtml, Html etc, but in respect of revenue streams from advertiser agency programmes and scripting.

It is possible to author to meet both web and mobile user. We achieved this when we were developing in conjunction with Google on the Beta search service for Mobile users. But in relation to delivery of advertising or dynamic rich media content presentation it would only provide a very poor compromise.

The Mobile community is completely different, the same as the early development of web TV, I was on with Wally May at Microsoft, you can't marry all together successfully. I believe greater achievement and respect will come from Broadcasters and publishers who offer services dedicated to these devices. Greater resources would be required to develop and publish content across more environments, but that is the price to pay.

Excuse my humble example in respect of The PC Web and The Mobile Web, but it's like buying a rally car and entering it into an F1 Grand Prix. They are both vehicles but in totally different classes.

Alastair

The BBC needs to build 800 x 600 to ensure a starting point for cross platform compatibility. Especially in relation to the little people and our more senior members of the community who we must not forget who suffer from sight.

I would suggest that with the recent appearance of cheap ultra mobile devices that 800x480 would be a more suitable minimum screen size.
