I wrote a bit of a blog post[1] about this myself, but for my money there is always a fundamental flaw in such research. It tells you what people have - not what people actually use. The two are, of course, not necessarily the same. Such data could be discovered - it's a bit of JavaScript - although would inevitibly require some simplification when reported to those wanting the data. True, the data when received may back up the assumption that is being made by most web designers (this is not a BBC issue after all). However without the data, we don't know. Which is a real shame.
