Apparently, the owners were informed by their desktop background being
changed to a notice informing them of the infection and giving the URL
http://www.bbc.co.uk/click/infection where more detail on the test is given.

I note that the advice on that page seems to be WinXP only but I do
wonder how many of the affected boxes were still on Win 95/98/ME, in
which case the information there wouldn't be much help to someone with
limited knowledge.
