I thought I’d posted this to the list, but I actually didn’t :)

Anyway, for anybody interested, and wanting to brush up on the finer
points of Project Canvas—besides the blog post Nick linked to—you may
all enjoy the following…

The BBC docs live at:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/news/press_releases/july/canvas_supporting.shtml

It’s actually worth reading it all if you have an interest, but
section 2 (“EPG and enabling access for content and service
providers”) gets into the meat of it, and basically lays out the
proposition for it being a twist on a walled garden (rather than specs
putting the consumer in control and providing easy mechanisms for them
to subscribe to services):

http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/assets/files/pdf/consult/canvas_additional/section2.pdf

Of particular amusement is “Competition law and state aid analysis”—be
sure to read this one:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/assets/files/pdf/consult/canvas_additional/competition.pdf

Some further background can be found on the Unofficial Project Canvas site:

http://www.projectcanvas.co.uk/

There’s also a rather scathing write-up of the DTG Project Canvas
kick-off meeting:

http://informitv.com/news/2009/09/25/canvaskicksoff/#

(it mostly appears to be scathing because the industry response was
equally so, in fairness to it)

Canvas has also announced a “position of alignment” with the HbbTV initiative:

http://www.iptv-news.com/iptv_news/october_09/project_canvas_cooperating_with_hbbtv_initiative

And frankly, looking at the website:

http://www.hbbtv.org/

…it doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence, especially as it doesn’t
appear to have publicly released ANYTHING yet except a list of
participants.

Relatedly, and I’m not sure where Canvas fits in with this (if at
all), there’s the “Open IPTV Forum”, which today released its own set
of horrifically overarching specs:

http://www.oipf.org/

I can’t help but think that the broadcast industry attempting to shape
the Internet in its own image—which much of this seems to be—isn’t
exactly doing it many favours.
