AARRGH! Before anyone wastes any time on my post- I have checked again and found a syntax error in my specification of the DHCP range in the main config file. I probably don't even need it there but someone may add an entry in the hosts file at some later stage.
I am now reasonably confident that my typo caused the error message and backuppc to abort. Now to further examine an apparent race condition when my fast server attempts to backup a slow WINDOZE laptop!
