I've been using Reiserfs; other people report good success with XFS. Might
be informative for someone with copious spare time to benchmark a
backuppc_nightly run on each filesystem.

I think Reiserfs is superior to ext3 for this application; partly because it
handles lots of small files well, also because you don't have to worry about
running out of inodes before you run out of disk space.
