I'm not sure this relates to your problem, but one quirk I've noticed
about smbclient is that it observes the settings in /etc/samba/smb.conf
so if you have made any security-related changes there it may not
be doing what you expect.  I found this because I had set up my backuppc
box as a samba server with domain authentication but I wanted it to log
in to local accounts for backups to be in the backup operators group.
