There is an implied rewind when you use the st0 device as opposed to the nst0 device. The number to fsf is how many to skip, so this should be at the 3rd tape archive. > # tar Btfj /dev/nst0 > tar: /dev/nst0: Cannot read: Input/output error Are there 3 archives? What happens if you just do tar -t's to read through them in order? You can do an extra one to skip each of the end-of-file marks.
