I've reconfigured my kernel so that VIA device driver is built into the kernel (rather than being an unloaded module) and that's had a major effect on disk throughput. Additionally, I ran "reiserfs.fsck --rebuild-tree" which found 2 filesystem problems and fixed them. Having performed these tasks, BackupPC has now run successfully (without precipitating a system hang or reboot). Thanks to the suggestions from the list!
