I use webmin to create dumps of the databases nightly and then
backuppc will grab that data.

I've asked some of the same questions and not received and answer yet.
 From reading the traffic on the list over the last 2 weeks I get the
feeling that not very many people are using the archive feature.

The files created by archive are just tarballs of the machine you are
backing up so you just  use tar to restore the files.
