I've had my BackupPC installation backing up to an external encrypted USB2 hard-drive for a few months now. Works great. I'm not using cryptoloop, but instead using DeviceMapper.
I followed Ubuntu's Encrypted File System Howto (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EncryptedFilesystemHowto) to set up the encrypted volume. The encryption is a function of the Linux Kernel, so it's completely transparent to BackupPC. -- Andrew S.
