I had the same problem as you have now. I was using backuppc 2.1.1-2sarge1 from
Debian stable, and suddenly I started having this problem. I tried almost
everything and easily turned into headache. I solved this by just upgrading
backuppc to the last version: 2.1.2-4 (in Debian).
