I use backuppc to backup 5 hosts: atlas - Linux, omnia - Linux, fiona -
os x, ikarus - os x, and spindy - Linux. I have not had a problem until
last night when I got a notification e-mail that an error occurred
backing up spindy. The XFerLog.bad log is 1.8GB!!! The onerous line is:

Can't open /var/lib/backuppc/pc/spindy/new//f%2fetc/ for empty output
  create 0 / 0

And this is repeated over and over and over again until the job finally
gives up the goose (YOU'VE LOST THAT LOVIN FEELIN!!!). The line that
occurs before the many errors is:

create d 755 0/0 4096 xml

That file appears to be created fine. It is not a space issue as here
is my df:

Filesystem 1M-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda2 4695M 1122M 3335M 26% /
varrun 1013M 3M 1011M 1% /var/run
varlock 1013M 1M 1013M 1% /var/lock
udev 1013M 1M 1013M 1% /dev
devshm 1013M 0M 1013M 0% /dev/shm
/dev/sda1 177M 30M 138M 18% /boot
/dev/sdb2 147203M 2506M 137220M 2% /home
/dev/sda3 140656M 9502M 124009M 8% /var
/dev/sdc1 281691M 181899M 85484M 69% /media/backup

I backup to /var/lib/backuppc so I do have ~124GB free to play with.

I would appreciate any help I can get on this, as the only mention I
have found of this error was when a file was locked on a Windows host.

Help!

:)
