I was using SMB for backups of Windows machines, and had no problem with large files. However, the SMB restore always exited when I reached the 2Gb limit when attempted to restore a file larger than 2Gb. I experimented with SMB from the command line, and there is no problem restoring files of up to 7Gb as long as the file wasn't compressed, and Tar had no probleming uncompressing large files. There seems to be a problem only when Tar and SMB are combined. I did quite a bit of searching, and there seems to be no indication that transferring files larger then 2Gb should be a problem, but there may be a potential problem with files that are between 2Gb and 4Gb. The Backuppc documentation says that it can compensate for this problem on backups and restores, but I never found a way to successfully restore a file directly if it was larger than 2Gb.
I used the FTP download successfully for large files, and also downloading a Zip file and unzipping it on the restore host works fine. However, I also have some Linux machines I wanted to backup, so I switched to Rsync instead for all of my machine backups, both Windows and Linux, which greatly simplifies management of the configuration files. Backups and restores work fine with Rsync, although long file names are a problem (greater than 256 characters). That isn't an issue for us, as the only files that exceed the name length limit are temporary Internet files on the Windows machines. Rsync does seem more efficient, restores and backups are faster, and our network load seems to be about 20% less with Rsync vs. SMB. I hope this helps, and I would like to know if you decide to contiue with SMB and you get it working.
