If it is Linux than best method is rsync.
Even if windows you can use rsync with cygwin setup , As per my observation even hidden share also easily affected by viruses.
So If you do not want to share your drive even hidden sharing the rsync is good method for backup windows pc.
I never face such kind of problem of special charactor, But I always use rsycn.
