Hi Michael,

Sounds like you're looking for a backup program that supports "bare-metal"
restore capability. You might want to check out DriveImage XML
(http://www.runtime.org/dixml.htm) for this type of a solution.

BackupPC is focused on backing up sets of individual files. If your machine
goes down, you will first have to re-install windows from the original CD,
and THEN restore your files from BackupPC to the hard drive.

If you're looking for an [expensive] solution that can handle bare metal
restores of lots of windows machines (think servers), you might want to
check out Unitrends (http://www.unitrends.com/). Their Data Protection Unit
(or DPU) is relatively pricey, but I have not seen an equivalent solution
that does so well with "hot bare metal backups" and restores over the
network by booting from a CD and connecting to the backup server. I've
searched open source solutions, and haven't found anything like it.

Subject: [BackupPC-users] Windows XP/2000 backup...

How can this be used to backup Windows XP/2000/NT with the bootloader being
hidden in the MBR?

Does this software support booting the client you want to backup/restore
over
a network?

Regards,

Michael Robinson
