I'm running BackupPC 3.0.0 on CentOS 4.4, I don't have par2 and I have the following in my config.pl:
$Conf{ParPath} = '';
I don't have any problems. I don't know of a CentOs 4 compatible
repository that carries par2, but I think you can get par2cmdline
from <http://parchive.sourceforge.net/>.
