I suspect this type of error relates to long idle times on the socket
connection between the remote rsync and the local File::RsyncP.

Rsync protocol version 29 introduced a keep-alive message that is sent
periodically. Unfortunately protocol version 29 introduces a number
of the changes that File::RsyncP doesn't yet support - it's still at
version 28. I'm surprised this is ever needed since TCP connections
should stay alive - perhaps this depends upon the network equipment
between the machines. Of course, if you are running over a WAN, VPAN
or perhaps WLAN you might have an unreliable connection.

You might try breaking your backup into smaller pieces and hopefully
each piece survives, or otherwise use tar.
