The most likely explanation is the file is changing during the backup.
There was a bug prior to BackupPC-3.0.0beta2 (and also 2.x) that caused
this problem on large files of particular sizes.
So you should make sure you are running the final 3.0.0 release version.

Hmmm. What happens when you look in that directory from the command
line? What files are there? If there is an attrib file, what does
this command display:
BACKUPPC_INSTALLPATH/bin/BackupPC_attribPrint ./attrib
