Maybe the pooling?

If you have three full backups, any identical files are cross-linked to
optimize storage. I would guestimate that more than 90% of files from
one full backup to the next are unchanged. My BackupPC pool represents
186GB (see "full backups/incr backups" report on "host summary page")
but physically stores 56GB (see "Pool is.." on status page report).
