Hi Brian,
I'm currently backing up about 12 Windows Server 2003 boxes using rsyncd for
windows from the backuppc download page. I do entire backups of the systems
using a shadow copies of each drive. This allows me to reload the entire state
of the server as it was from the last incremental. I found a web site where a
guy talks about a script he made which makes virtual shadow copy drives of any
drive on the system that you specify. So I have batch files that run, which
make shadow drives for each installed hard drive. So if my server has only a
C: drive, i have a batch file run the script which makes a shadow copy drive
called O:. Then I have backuppc backup O: on that server. This also allows me
to backup files in use as well. Now the only down side to this is restoring
single files. The shadow copy drive O: is read-only. But this is easily fixed
by editing the rsyncd files and the config file for that server, or restoring
the file to a zip and copying it over.

I tested this method by making a Knoppix boot cd boot up with rsync and
everything needed to talk with backuppc. Once booted into Knoppix on the
crashed system, I can turn read/write on for NTFS drives, setup rsync, and edit
the host name to the name of the crashed server. Once everything was set I ran
a restore to the crashed server and all the data is copied to the NTFS drive.
I rebooted without the Knoppix CD and I was up and running exactly how it was
before the crash.

Here is the site with the scripts....

But yes rsyncd works great on Windows 2003.

I've been backing up clients very well since I got BackupPC configured
correctly for my environment. The clients are either Windows XP or Windows
2000 PC's. Using rsyncd works very well on these clients.

How does it work on a Windows 2003 Standard Server? I'd like to begin backing
up the data drives on this server (not the C Drive), but I'm concerned because
of the OS, it is backed up to tape, and because the business system runs on it.

It is currently getting backed up to tape, e.g., Full Backups on Friday's and
Differential Backups Monday through Thursday nights. There are 5 data drives
(Logical Drives) on the server that I'd like to back up.

Is there any problems using rsyncd on a Windows 2003 Server?

Will the BackupPC backups reset the archive bit and confuse the Tape Backups?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

BTW, great software! BackupPC is nearly effortless once setup and configured
properly. I've got 29 Full backups and 115 Incremental backups from 30 hosts
(clients) in one week's time.
