- have hints about which backup boomed the pool size (for this a graph for

Why not just use rrdtool (or a more high-level tool that uses rrdtool) to monitor your BackupPC partition? I'd keep the monitoring with the monitoring and not in the app being monitored.

By the way: the BackupPC web interface already shows you the percentage used on the partition that is used for your pool.
