Part of the reason is so that after I go through the work of setting this all up, I can distribute a BackupPC-Knoppix cd that includes all of my hard work -- so nobody else has to do it again. I envision booting off the live cd, clicking an "Install to HD" icon, and that's all that's needed for the initial installation besides editing the config.pl file. I think this would be an excellent way of distributing BackupPC.
Once that's done, then you have a hard drive installation that is portable from one machine to another. I consider this a huge benefit, because I can mail the hard drive to anybody who knows how to unscrew a computer case and have him start restoring backups. No Linux knowledge required. You seem to suggest that I can start with a single drive installation and turn it into a software RAID 1 setup. I want to verify that this is what you are saying. I don't have much experience w/ software RAID. (I've only used it on one server so far).
