the solution is even more simple: restore to an empty directory. If your hard disk is broken and you replace it, it will be empty anyway. If you now restore your backup, it will contain exactly what you want it to contain. That is probably the most common case of wanting "exactly the state of the last backup". On the other hand, if you deleted something from a directory and want everything back from the last backup, who says you always mean to imply "and delete everything newer"? If that is done in error, there is no way to get those files back (while you can always still delete them if you don't want them), as they are obviously not in the backup. Well, the same is true for files existing in the backup and changed since. You might want to undo those changes, or you might not. You'll always need to think first and restore second. Your case of "I want exactly the state in the last backup" is simple. 'rm' and then restore.
