I finally succeeded in backing up the problem host on both backup servers.
Here
is the log of the last two backup attempts:

2007-09-09 15:06:56 full backup started for directory /
2007-09-09 16:06:54 Got fatal error during xfer (Tar exited with error 256 ()
status)
2007-09-09 16:06:59 Backup aborted (Tar exited with error 256 () status)
2007-09-09 16:06:59 Saved partial dump 254
2007-09-09 16:36:47 full backup started for directory /
2007-09-09 17:36:31 full backup started for directory /mnt/install/test/
2007-09-09 17:36:34 full backup 254 complete, 467165 files, bytes, 36 xferErrs
( bad files, bad shares, 36 other)

Interestingly, although the failed backups don't indicate any errors in the log
files, the "Xfer Error Summary" section of the web interface shows over 400000
errors for each failed backup. I attempted several full and incremental
backups
  before finally succeeding.
