I'd try excluding certain directories from the backup. Are there any really
big files? (.iso images or the like).

try excluding half the directories, see if the backup works, and if it does,
add some more in until you have all the directories, or you've found the
troublesome one. If the backup of half the directories doesn't work, try
excluding the other half and backing up the directories you had previously
excluded.
