OK, so it boils down to one machine on which this happens. All the others are just fine, with what should be the same sshd and sudo config, but there are different versions of the rsync packages, so I tried updating that.
Still the infinite hang, just trying to back up /boot and /root and /etc as a small test. Ideas on what I should check next? If I run that rsync command manually, what should be produced and where?
