I use backuppc for a full backup of 12 servers (most Linux) plus some
other machines with backing up of some shares only, on a daily basis we
have around 12 GB new files (before compression, average of last week).

Our backup server is really boring: A Pentium-4 based host with a RAID5
of 5 400 GB SATA harddisks on a 3Ware 9500 controller, the funny amount
of 1 GB RAM, connected with gigabit ethernet to our LAN.

Though this machine isn't the dream of a sysop it is working well: Our
backup window is from 19:30 to 07:00 and only sometimes (e.g. the
fileserver has it's weekly full backup) I can see a longer running dump.

So in my eyes the hardware isn't the important point, a low to middle
class server with a big raid should be in the most cases sufficient.

Greetings,
Renke
