We have our old backup system (set up by one of my colleagues), which 
used plain rsync to /data. After each backup, a simple 'cp -a' was done 
to USB disks.
So I used the USB disks as source. Then I simply symlinked the 
directories (/mnt/samba/data -> /mnt/lacie/backup/client001/data) and 
ran the backup with BackupPC.

If we have a new client, we always take a local snapshot of the data to 
one of our USB disks and transfer them by car.
Never underestimate the bandwidth of a car loaded with disks ;-)
