I've seen this myself - it's not backuppc related - but LDAP related.
Have a look at:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=399849

As I say in that bug, you need to be really careful with your ldap
config file (e.g. ensure there is only once space) as the parsing
function was very brittle.  I have since upgraded to a later version of
LDAP (libnss-ldap 256 in particular) and I have not had any issues for
some time.
