This is explained in the documentation: <http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/faq/BackupPC.html#item__conf_backupfilesexclude_ >. The options are directly passed to the transfer program you're using and smb, tar and rsync happen to use different include/exclude mechanisms.
What I'm trying to do is very basic so I'm mystified why it doesn't work. Any help would be appreciated?
I'm sure it works, there must be some error in your settings. Could you maybe post your BackupFilesExclude and BackupFilesOnly settings?
