It appears to be a loss of network connectivity during the backup. The
ping failures definitely support that thesis too.  The root cause could
be one of a variety of things: various hardware failures, running out
of memory etc.

By "the command" do you mean just a ssh/tar command (without BackupPC)?
If so, then, yes, this is a network problem and not related to BackupPC.
